The 'gold-winged wood-pecker' and the 'chesnut-oak' Size:Standard: 6 x 4in The plate is inscribed: '1'Picus major alis aureis', the gold winged wood pecker, perched on a branch of 'Quercus castaneae foliis', the chesnut oak (Catesby's identifications; modern scientific names: Colaptes auratus, the northern flicker; Quercus michauxii, the swamp chestnut oak). Plate 18 from volume I of The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, by Mark Catesby (London, 1731). Mark Catesby was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1733.
